Time Required:    5-20 hrs/week; can work full-time 30-40+ hrs/week

Training:  If you like to write, but need to brush up your skills; consider a writing course at a local community college or university.  Our recreation center offers a class on travel writing so you can check with your local recreation center to see if they have classes which would be helpful to you.  You could also consider taking a photography class for capturing photos to go along with the copy you submit.  You’ll also need to be able to work within a quality word processing program – specific programs may be required by your clients.

Market:  Websites, business owners, blogs, social media business owners, etc.

Home Based:       Yes

Internet:              Yes

Location:             Local, Regional, National, Global

Start-Up Costs:    $50 - $1,500

Minimizing Start-Up Costs:  To start your business, use your current computer or purchase a new computer for <$600.   You’ll also need to consider how you plan to access the internet.  If you have minimal resources, you can access the internet from WiFi hotspots at libraries, restaurants, hotels, and airports.   If you have more resources, you can get an internet connection in your home using cable or telephone services.

Attend local networking events to get the word out about your business to small business entrepreneurs who may be able to use your services on their websites, social media, and other marketing efforts.  Ask for referrals from current clients or local business people. Look for free apps for keeping your calendar of appointments and accept payments from your clients. If possible, use word processing software you already own or look for shareware.
